Medical

We ask for detailed information regarding your child’s health on entry and throughout their time at Wood Street.  Please update this information through the school office when any new or changing needs occur.

If a child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact the parents to take their child home, as we have no medical facilities in school.  Please ensure we have a telephone number where you can be contacted during the day.  It is useful if we can have a second person to contact in case you are not available.  Please notify the school by 9.30am if your child is ill (see also Attendance); if a child has an infectious illness, it is essential that we are aware of this as we must report some of these to our Local Authority.  Please do not send your child to school until he/she is fully recovered.  Children who have had diarrhoea or sickness must not return to school until they have been clear of symptoms for 48 hours.  If you need to know recommended periods to keep children with infectious illnesses away from school, please contact the school office.

We do not give medication on a regular basis unless it is for a long-term treatment, nor do we administer non-prescribed medicines.  We are able to administer some prescribed medicines but ask that medicines are administered outside school hours where possible.  Prescribed medicines can only be administered once a Pupil Medication Request form has been completed and only if the medicine is in the container and clearly labelled as originally dispensed.  Please talk to Miss Potter regarding support the school can provide should your child have specific medical needs.

Our office staff and teaching assistants deal with any minor injuries that occur during the day.  All staff have completed first aid training.  Children who have bumped their head, will be given a ‘I bumped my head sticker’ and an accident form will be placed in your child's bookbag.  In the unlikely event of a more serious accident, we will always contact parents.

Periodically, the school doctor or nurse checks your child’s general health, including vision and hearing tests.  You are always informed of those occasions and may attend if you so wish.  This is also the opportunity to highlight any concerns you may have about your child’s well-being.

Reporting Illness

Wood Street Infant School has an efficient and secure system for reporting your child’s absence due to illness, called Studybugs.

If you haven’t already, please get the free Studybugs app, or register on the Studybugs website, and use it to tell us whenever your child’s ill and unable to attend school.
