Outdoor Classroom Day 2018

posted 17 May 2018, 08:57 by Charlotte Chapman   [ updated 17 May 2018, 08:59 ]

Well what an amazing day we've had!  We started this years celebration with whole school Yoga on the field with Lucy from Tayana Yoga.  The children were so focused and loved holding some paired stretches too.  We finished the yoga session with some mindful meditation, clearing our minds ready for the day.  The children then spent the morning in a variety of outdoor session from gardening, to litter picking, to mud art and even a giant game of hide and seek in the long grass!  We enjoyed our Royal Wedding themed lunch on the field in the sunshine then prepared for our exciting family party.  Year 2 made crown shape biscuits and naturally flavoured water and we set the field with some traditional lawn games (think boules, cricket and snakes and ladders!).  We were then joined by parents, grandparents and siblings and enjoyed a wonderful garden party on the field.  Outdoor learning is such an important part of our curriculum and is something we all feel very passionately about.  There are a lot of photos but they are truly wonderful and capture the pure joy on the kids faces throughout the day. Outdoor Learning Celebration Day!

posted 21 Nov 2017, 06:03 by Charlotte Chapman   [ updated 21 Nov 2017, 06:03 ]

The pupils of Wood Street Infant School in Guildford were lucky enough to enjoy a fantastic day of outdoor activities this week to celebrate being awarded ‘Silver’ for the ‘Learning Outside The Classroom’ (LOtC) mark. Wood Street Infant School are one of only a few schools in Surrey that have been awarded this prestigious mark and they wanted to celebrate this achievement with all of the families of the ‘outstanding ‘ village school.

The Outdoor Learning Celebration Day began with a brief presentation on how teachers use outdoor learning to enrich children's learning experiences. This was followed by inviting families to explore up onto the field and take part in various outdoor activities ranging from mud painting to popping popcorn on the fire-pit!

Thank you to all the children and parents who came along to the community bulb planting activity. There were a lot of bulbs to be planted (and trenches dug by adults). Thank you to the Horticultural Society for inviting us to help them plant 1000 bulbs. We hope that each Spring the flowers will remind the children oftheir time at Wood Street Infant School and the contribution theymade to their community.

Last week across the school we were celebrating healthy eating week.  The children explored the importance of healthy eating and how to stay healthy through food and exercise.  As part of this our very own 'Bake Off' Contestant Stu Henshall came in to cook healthy treats with the kids.  Each child helped to cook some delicious veggie muffins, they were a HUGE hit! Check out below to see some of the children in action.

We sadly had to say goodbye to the blocks on the last day of the spring term.  We had an absolutely amazing time exploring and learning with them.  During the last week we made a story chair, built a sentence wall, created a castle, made word blocks, built a maze and even programmed a beebot through it! Check out the photos below to see this all in action.

A huge thank you to for making this happen!
